OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma’s top insurance official warned that health insurance premiums could see “substantial increases” next year if federal subsidies for the Affordable Care Act aren’t extended.

“A permanent extension of the $338 billion in enhanced federal health insurance subsidies is looking more unlikely,” said Glen Mulready, commissioner of the Oklahoma Insurance Department, in a statement. “While there might be other potential solutions considered by Congress this year, Oklahoma’s leaders and citizens need to be prepared for the consequences of these subsidies ending with significant changes in health insurance costs anticipated.”

He said the increases in premiums for the 300,000 Oklahomans who rely on the ACA Marketplace for health insurance could begin in 2026 if federal enhanced Advanced Premium Tax Credits are not extended by Dec. 31.

Sometimes the truth can emerge years after a story has fallen out of the headlines. That’s what happened when Frontier co-founder and former editor Ziva Branstetter sat down at her computer in 2016 and started looking through court documents from a lawsuit involving a man who died in the Tulsa County jail.

What she found shocked her and drew nationwide attention.

Elliott Williams died alone, starving and unable to move because of his broken neck in 2011 while incarcerated at Tulsa’s David L. Moss Detention Center. Video footage showed Williams screaming for help, but jail staff accused Williams of faking his paralysis.

A former Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office captain testified Williams’ handling was a “complete failure.” An autopsy revealed Williams died from complications of a broken neck. He was also severely dehydrated.

The moment couldn’t have been more compelling for Wyatt Hendrickson.

The fans cheering the second-seeded Hendrickson’s name. His walk-out song, Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” blaring through the Wells Fargo Center sound system. An American flag wrapped around his back, as it has all season during his walkouts.

Awaiting him was the top-seeded Gable Steveson of Minnesota. And Saturday evening’s heavyweight title match, concluding the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia, couldn’t have fit the mold of an American underdog story more.

In a classic David vs. Goliath battle, Hendrickson knew his role: David. In this case, Hendrickson was a renowned figure in the college wrestling realm, but still searching for his elusive crown.

Still, Hendrickson persevered. He dethroned the heavyweight Goliath and clawed his way to college wrestling’s mountaintop, securing his first individual national title via a 5-4 decision against Steveson.

“In the story, David had a vision of victory,” Hendrickson said. “I kind of carried that with me all week. Even though he went after Goliath and everyone was like, ‘This can’t be done,’ he had the mindset of a champion.”
